OAKLAND, CA, June 22, 2011 . . .The condition of pavement on the Bay Area’s 42,500 lane-miles of local streets and roads is only fair at best, with the typical stretch of asphalt showing serious wear and likely to require rehabilitation soon. The first version of StreetSaver - modestly named Bay Area Pavement Management System (BAPMS) - was released in 1987, making 2007 the 20th anniversary year. MTC is proud to celebrate the program, and the 350+ users nationwide to date. For the past two decades, we have expanded beyond the initial technical successes of the program toward funding success through our ability to document local street and road needs and shortfalls. Looking forward, StreetSaver will play an even more important role as the state of California looks to Bay Area region as a model of how best to assess local street and road needs, revenues and shortfalls.

The Fall 2005 Newsletter from the University of California's Institute of Transportation Studies contains an article written by MTC's Theresa Romell titled, "Taking the Same Route: How Regional Coordination Can Improve Your Local Roads."

This article describes the joining of a PMS and a GIS for real-time analysis of dynamically segmented sections of pavement.
